Honorary Doctorate for the NCCR North-South Director
On 11 July 2009, Hans Hurni, Professor of Geography and Sustainable Development, Director of the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) and NCCR North-South Director, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by Haramaya University, Ethiopia. The degree acknowledges his dedicated research in the agricultural sciences, in particular in the field of soil and water conservation, and his many years of work and commitment to the people of Ethiopia. With 29,000 students, Haramaya University is one of the country's largest universities. Only very seldom does it award honorary doctorates to foreigners: this is only the second time in its over 50-year history. Hurni lived 10 years in Ethiopia with his family as of 1974, first as the director of the Simen National Park, then as the initiator and leader of a countrywide research network to combat soil erosion. His untiring dedication to the advancement of the country and the people of Ethiopia never ceased after this initial decade of work in the country.

Dilemmas in Participatory Forest Management in Northwest Pakistan: A Livelihoods Perspective.

This book attempts to unterline the livelihoods perspective of participatory or joint forest management initiatives in NWFP. The main aim is to understand the linkages between rural livelihoods, the role forests play in the livelihoods and the impact of (changing) forest governance on these livelihoods.
The analysis revealed that in the NWFP model of joint forest management, the provincial Forest Department maintains the priorities of forest conservation, while local people's top priorities are to secure the financial means they require for living and related basic needs. The book shows that this divergence of expectations was not taken into consideration during the reform process. Mistrust and lack of effective communication between main stakeholders are identified as another factor hindering the effectiveness of the participatory approach. Likewise the interventions had not taken care to include the poor and marginalised sections of the community.
