Research Theme Strengthening migrants' wives in rural north-west Pakistan (SAS-2_03)
Summary: This project contributed to transnational migrant wives' empowerment in rural north-west Pakistan. While women's status in rural north-west Pakistan is low anyway, their husbands' migration has been identified as a major factor further increasing their vulnerability. In this PAMS, women's organisations were built in eight villages. Important issues were discussed in these organisations, such as womens rights, health, or the situation of migrant workers abroad. Apparently, the discussions led to a change in values and attitudes among local people. Furthermore, the organisations were formally registered, which provided them the possibility to submit two water supply project proposals and one women vocational training centre project proposal to the District Government for financial support. These concrete actions and the building of social capital in remote areas of Pakistan are very likely to contribute to an improvement of the living conditions of local people involved in this PAMS.
