Research Theme Effective sanitation systems through stakeholder involvement: A case study of faecal sludge management in Thailand (SEA-2_01)
Summary: In 2004, the Thai Pollution Control Department (PCD) has implemented a PAMS dealing mainly with technical aspects of faecal sludge management (FSM) by constructed wetlands with only limited involvement of the local community. This arrangement has resulted in the malfunction of the fecal sludge management system. This new PAMS was thus designed with the overarching aim of identifying the determining factors in effective sanitation and establishing appropriate coping strategies on FSM. As a result, dialogues with all stakeholders could develop coping strategies auch as capacity development of municipal officeers, raising awareness and particpation and provision of adequate FS treatment capacity.
