Peter Ngau, professor at the University of Nairobi and ISAB member of the NCCR North-South. Read here what he said about last year’s NCCR North-South symposium…

„I judge the NCCR North-South’s Symposium to be a very positive meeting, because it brings together a large group of scientists and researchers who are deeply concerned about issues of capacity building, strengthening research and the role of research in society.

As advisors we are actually trying to see how we can even give ideas to the researchers. The ethical values of research should be considered. In view of Kenya’s past history we should look at the lessons learnt and how to deal with it.

In our capacity as researchers in the South, and in Kenya in particular, we have identified a need for transparency on ethical issues. So research is really one way of making things more transparent by uncovering different aspects of what society is doing. I think what the new Kenyan government is actually doing is creating greater transparency throughout: the government is encouraging communication.

I think researchers should help increase this transparency. Knowing the implications of what they are doing to society they have to make the ethical standards known. I think that is how researchers can play their part in making transparency a common issue. There is quite a lot of research work ahead, including research collaboration. I look forward to seeing how the project will become more sophisticated.”
