Safeguarding equal access to water for the world’s population is one of the greatest tasks of the 21st century. Yet the problem is not necessarily one of adequate supply: Hundreds of millions of people are deprived of water due to issues like poor governance of rivers and catchment areas and inadequate sanitation. Combining the expertise of Swiss TPH and CDE of Switzerland with that of CETRAD, based in Kenya, RCO, based in Ethiopia, and AIT, based in Thailand, the aim of this project is to articulate suitable policy responses to global water challenges. Building on NCCR North-South case studies from Africa and Southeast Asia and comparing their results with others’ findings as well as global debates, the research team seeks to provide evidence-based recommendations on water in domains such as river basin management, agriculture, sanitation, and health.
