Partnership Region Central America
JACS:
Central America
Countries: El Salvador, Venezuela, Mexico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic - map
Summary: The building of the JACS ACC is based on scientific and societal achievements resulting from activities in different syndrome contextsin particular the urban context- and developed by the IPs implied in the region, along with local, national and regional stakeholders.

Most identified core problems have been addressed (12 out of 13), not only from an urban sociological point of view, but also through an enriching scientific exchange with other disciplines (collaboration with IP1, IP2, IP3, IP4, IP6, IP8, JACS SAM).

First research results in the urban context confirm the impact of mechanisms associated to economic and cultural globalisation on the urbanisation process. Different patterns of clusters of core problems have been identified. On the Haitian/Dominican border: ex-clusion of most of the population from access to urban resources, depletion of natural resources and crisis of local governments. In El Salvador and Venezuela: weakening of economic and political power and growing dependence on the USA. In the high-land/lowland context in Mexico: depletion and contamination of water resources and degradation of forest ecosystems, enhanced by inadequate institutional mechanisms.

Mitigation has been addressed through 6 PAMS, focusing on the empowerment of local populations (5 result directly from IP5/JACS ACC research).
